Strong Quake Hits Northern Cebu

On September 30, at almost 10 p.m., a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked Northern Cebu, shaking homes and causing people to panic.  Houses, buildings, roads, bridges, and other infrastrucures were damaged across Bogo City, San Remigio, Medellin, Daanbantayan, Tabogon, and other towns in Northern Cebu. Authorities later confirmed several deaths and dozens of injuries. Hundreds of homes, schools, and public buildings were left cracked or partially collapsed, while key roads were torn apart, slowing down rescue and relief operations. It also opened up many sinkholes (around 70 as of writing).

People were only starting to recover when another strong jolt came. At around 1:06 a.m. on October 13, a magnitude 5.8 aftershock shook Northern Cebu. Families were jolted awake in the middle of the night, many rushing outside in fear of another collapse.

Residents in affected areas have been urged to stay cautious, particularly in places where the ground has shown signs of instability.

Survivors hold up improvised signs, appealing for urgent aid in the hardest-hit barangays.

Despite the fear and sleepless nights, people are showing resilience. Families are helping each other, LGUs and barangays have set up temporary shelters, and local responders continue to work around the clock. Help has also poured in from private groups and LGU's across the country, sending relief goods, medical teams, and volunteers to support the hardest-hit areas.

The aftershocks may have rattled nerves, but they also reminded everyone of the importance of preparedness and bayanihan. For now, Northern Cebu stays vigilant. Residents stay prepared for aftershocks, holding on to the hope that recovery is near.
